November 13, 2008 Bunnell Fl. -- Reports of problems at the Pig Tails Pig Sanctuary prompted Flagler Humane Society officials to investigate conditions at the 10 acre property in West Flagler County. On November 6, Sheriff's Deputies, representatives from the Humane Society and a veterinarian visited the property on County Road 90 and discovered some 500 or more pigs many of them emaciated and malnourished. A Sheriff's Deputy report from the visit described a gruesome scene of dead and dying pigs.
Sanctuary owner Lory Yarzulo, 45, has been charged by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office with cruelty to animals and unlawful confinement of animals as a result of the investigation. She is the owner of the Pig Sanctuary and operates a web site and a not for profit corporation soliciting donations to feed and take care of the pigs. “The conditions at the sanctuary are very bad. There are pigs that have starved to death and pigs that are so emaciated that they will have to be euthanized,” Flagler Humane Society Director Donna Howard said.
The Flagler Humane Society is working with the U.S. Humane Society and Flagler County to come up with a plan to care for the animals that can be saved. Yarzurlo has signed an agreement turning the animals over to the Humane Society.
We understand that there were a lot of rumors surfacing about what is going on at this Sanctuary. I am trying to find people to help squelch some of that by spreading the truth. The first day we responded to the complaints there were pigs dead and pigs down dying on the property. The local sheriff's department dispatched 9 pigs by order of our veterinarian. These were one shot dispatches. We euthanized 3 more and several more have dropped dead on the property. Lory has been charged and has surrendered all the animals to us. It is costing nearly $3,000 a week to feed and we are in desperate need of donations to help cover the feed bill alone. We are at the point of getting them confined in a smaller setting where they are easier to handle instead of roaming on 20 acres! I can tell you that since WE started feeding, we have not lost (1) pig...they are all upright and doing okay (as well as they can). We have fixed the well so that they have clean water. We have a long way to go and sure could use all the help we can get. Please pass this along and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. In Service, Donna S. Howard Director Flagler Humane Society

We do ask that if you have any questions to please either contact Donna S. Howard directly or us and if we don't have the answers we will get them. It is not the intention of FAREC to speak out against Lory Yazurlo but to be of help with the pigs and any other animals found there. Also remember that spreading false rumors or half truths do NOT help the situation so be sure of your facts before presenting them to anyone. If anyone can help in their area, please notify Donna. Also if you can help by taking any of the pigs or helping with transportation, that would be an added plus for the piggies there. They have been through hell and back and now it is up to us to not only speak for them but to help them What better gift can we give then to send some funds to help them this holiday season. Please consider making that donation. We also want to say a special thank you to Donna and the Flagler Humane Society for taking on this large rescue on and for all those who have jumped into help. Thank you for caring. Lana Hollenback Forgotten Angels Rescue & Education Center UPDATES
UPDATE: On Sunday, November 23, 2008, we received word from Donna Howard at Flagler HS that all was not well. They had begun testing that week and all 5 pigs which were picked at random and tested, tested positive for Pseudo rabies. No Brucellosis was found. On November 24, 2008 the State of Florida turned it all over to the USDA (Federal) although they are keeping them in the loop. On December 2, Donna Howard, head of the Flagler County Humane Society confirmed that Pig Tales Sanctuary was put under State Quarantine in 2003 and that quarantine had never been lifted. She also confirmed that there were several violations to that quarantine. USDA veterinarians are to be on site on December 3 to reevaluate the situation and make a determination on how they will proceed. Update as of 12/30/2008
